Forward iPhone Texts to Mattermost or Rocket.Chat
By Fwrd · · Updated
Create an incoming webhook in Mattermost or Rocket.Chat, paste its URL into Fwrd as a Webhook destination, then add a Shortcuts Message automation: each matching text posts to your channel on its own. Both products read a text field, and Fwrd’s webhook body already carries one, so there’s nothing to translate in between.
What you need: an iPhone on iOS 26 or later with Fwrd, a Mattermost or Rocket.Chat server reachable over HTTPS, and permission to create integrations on it (or an admin who can).
Why does a webhook work for Mattermost and Rocket.Chat?
Because both accept a plain JSON POST with a text field, and that’s what Fwrd sends. By default, every forward is a POST with Content-Type: application/json and this body:
{"content": "Your code is 482913", "text": "Your code is 482913"}
The message appears twice, exactly as it arrived, so services reading either field get it. Mattermost’s incoming webhook docs (checked October 18, 2026) say text is required unless you send attachments, and that a successful post gets a 200 reply. Rocket.Chat’s integrations docs (checked October 18, 2026) say a valid message “must include at least a text field.”
Neither page says what happens to fields it doesn’t list, such as content. Neither describes extra fields being rejected, and Fwrd 1.1’s App Store release notes name Mattermost and Rocket.Chat among the services its webhook works with. The full request is on the webhook guide, and iPhone SMS to webhook covers the other places it reaches.
How to forward iPhone texts to Mattermost
Mattermost calls these incoming webhooks, and each one posts to a channel you pick.
- Open Integrations. In Mattermost, open the Product menu and choose Integrations, then Incoming Webhook. If Integrations isn’t there, a System Admin has to turn on incoming webhooks in System Console, then Integrations, then Integration Management.
- Add the webhook. Select Add Incoming Webhook, give it a name such as iPhone texts, pick the channel that should get your texts, and select Add.
- Copy the URL. Mattermost shows an address like
https://your-mattermost-server.com/hooks/xxx-generatedkey-xxx. Anyone who has it can post to your server, so send it to your iPhone in a way only you can see. - Add a Webhook destination in Fwrd. Open Fwrd, tap +, choose Webhook, and rename it Mattermost if you like. Paste the whole address into the Configuration field. Tap Send Test Message, then save with the tick.
- Create the Message automation. In Shortcuts, make a Message automation that runs without asking, with a word your texts contain (or a single space for any text with a space in it), and add Fwrd’s Forward Message to All Destinations with Shortcut Input. The automation guide has every tap for iOS 26 and iOS 27.
- That’s it. New texts with your word now post to your Mattermost channel on their own, with the iPhone unlocked or locked.
How to forward iPhone texts to Rocket.Chat
Rocket.Chat’s version lives under the workspace’s integrations.
- Open Integrations. Go to Manage, then Workspace, then Integrations. Click New in the top right and choose the Incoming tab.
- Fill in the settings. Turn on Enabled, give it a name, and set Post to Channel to the channel for your texts. Set Post as to an existing user who is in that channel; Rocket.Chat’s docs say that user needs the Impersonate Other Users permission.
- Leave the script off. Fwrd’s body is already a valid message, so you don’t need Script Enabled.
- Save and copy the URL. After you save, the webhook URL appears in the Instructions section. It looks like
https://your-server/hooks/integrationId/token. Treat it like a password. - Add a Webhook destination in Fwrd. Open Fwrd, tap +, choose Webhook, paste the address into Configuration, tap Send Test Message, and save with the tick.
- Create the Message automation, as in step 5 for Mattermost.
- That’s it. New texts with your word now post to your Rocket.Chat channel on their own, with the iPhone unlocked or locked.

Why use Fwrd for this?
It’s a good fit when you run your own chat and want texts kept there:
- No account and no relay. Fwrd posts from the iPhone straight to your server. There’s no Fwrd server in between, so texts go only where you send them.
- Filters. A webhook destination can keep only texts with words you choose, ones that look like a verification code, or ones that arrive at certain hours. Try a Text checks a filter against a sample you type.
- Retries. If a request fails or times out, Fwrd tries again. Each attempt carries the same Idempotency-Key header, which your own endpoint can use to drop repeats; Mattermost and Rocket.Chat don’t read it.
- One automation, many places. The same action also reaches Slack, Discord, Telegram, Teams, email and more. For a team sharing one work phone, see shared phone texts to a team.
Fwrd’s free plan is 15 forwards a month, and a text counts once however many places it goes.
What it can’t do
- HTTPS only. Fwrd accepts only
https://addresses, and it doesn’t follow redirects, so paste the final webhook URL. - The server must answer. Fwrd counts a forward as delivered when the server replies with any 2xx status within 15 seconds.
- Markdown applies. Mattermost treats
textas Markdown, so a text with asterisks or underscores may show some words in bold or italics. - Mentions notify everyone. Mattermost’s docs say
@channeland@heretrigger notifications, so @channel or @here in a text will notify the whole channel. - New texts only, one way. Old texts aren’t sent, pictures don’t forward, and replies in the channel don’t go back as texts.
- The phone has to stay on and online. After a restart, unlock it once before forwarding starts again.
Questions people ask next
Will the post show who sent the text?
Not in the message itself. With Include Who Sent It on in Fwrd’s Settings and Sender chosen on Fwrd’s action, a webhook gets a separate sender field rather than a From: line in text. Mattermost and Rocket.Chat post the text field, and neither lists a sender field in its docs.
Can I send texts to more than one channel?
Yes. Each incoming webhook posts to one channel, so create one per channel and add each as its own Webhook destination in Fwrd. Give each one a different filter, for example codes to one channel and everything else to another.
Do I need a Fwrd account or a server of my own?
No Fwrd account, and no extra server. The webhook lives on your Mattermost or Rocket.Chat server, and Fwrd keeps its URL in the iPhone’s Keychain and posts to it from the phone.
Does it cost anything?
Fwrd is free for 15 forwards a month. Fwrd Pro removes the limit for $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year in the US.
