Can an iPad Receive SMS Texts Without an iPhone?

By Fwrd · · Updated

No. Apple lists two ways to text on an iPad: iMessage, which works on the iPad by itself, and SMS, MMS and RCS messages forwarded from your iPhone. If the iPad is on your Apple Account, turn on Apple’s Text Message Forwarding; if it’s on someone else’s, forward texts from the iPhone to a chat app on that iPad.

What you need: the iPhone that gets the texts, on and online. For your own iPad, the same Apple Account on both; for an iPad on another account, Fwrd on the iPhone (iOS 26 or later) and a chat app or email on the iPad.

Why can’t an iPad receive SMS on its own?

Because Apple doesn’t give it its own way to. Apple’s iPad guide (iPadOS 27, checked October 15, 2026) lists two ways to send texts in the iPad’s Messages app:

  • iMessage, with other people who use iMessage, in blue bubbles. It needs no iPhone: Apple says (checked October 15, 2026) it travels over Wi-Fi or cellular data.
  • SMS, MMS and RCS messages forwarded from your iPhone, in green bubbles.

So a text that isn’t an iMessage, such as one from an Android phone, reaches the iPad’s Messages app only through an iPhone. A SIM or eSIM is for data: Apple’s cellular settings page (checked October 15, 2026) says Wi-Fi + Cellular iPads support cellular data only, not cellular phone service.

How to get your iPhone’s texts on your own iPad

Apple’s Text Message Forwarding lets you reply from the iPad. These steps follow Apple’s forwarding page (published July 2, 2026, checked October 15, 2026).

  1. Turn on iMessage on the iPad. Open Settings, then Apps, then Messages, and turn on iMessage.

  2. Match the Apple Account. Tap Send & Receive. The Apple Account at the bottom has to be the one on your iPhone; if it isn’t, tap it to sign out, then sign in with the right one.

  3. Switch the iPad on from the iPhone. On the iPhone, open Settings, then Apps, then Messages, then Text Message Forwarding, and turn on the iPad. If a code appears on the iPad, enter it on the iPhone.

  4. That’s it. Texts you send and receive on the iPhone now appear in Messages on the iPad, and you can carry on the conversation there.

With Messages in iCloud on, Apple says forwarding is built in. If the setting or the iPad is missing, the missing Text Message Forwarding post has the fixes.

What if the iPad is on a different Apple Account?

Then Text Message Forwarding can’t reach it, because Apple needs every device on the same Apple Account. That’s common with a child’s iPad, a shared family iPad or a work iPad, or when the texts arrive on a work iPhone. A Shortcuts Message automation on the iPhone can send each matching new text to an app on that iPad instead.

Don’t share an Apple Account just for texts: it can sync far more, as forwarding between Apple Accounts explains.

Telegram, Discord, Slack, Microsoft Teams and WhatsApp all have iPad apps on the App Store (checked October 15, 2026), and the iPad’s Mail app opens email. Fwrd fits when you want chosen texts on an iPad on another Apple Account:

  • No account, and no Fwrd servers. Texts go straight from the iPhone to the chat or inbox you pick.
  • Eight destinations. Email, another phone or iMessage, WhatsApp, Discord, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Telegram, and your own webhook.
  • Filters on every destination keep only texts with your words, verification codes, or certain hours; Email, another phone and WhatsApp need an If first.

Forward texts to an iPad on another account

These steps send each text to a Telegram, Discord or Slack chat read on the iPad.

  1. Add the chat in Fwrd on the iPhone. Open Fwrd, tap +, and choose Telegram, Discord or Slack. Paste the channel’s webhook URL for Discord or Slack, or the bot token and chat ID for Telegram; the Telegram guide shows how to use a group the iPad’s user is in. Tap Send Test Message, then save.

  2. Create a Message automation. On iOS 27, open Shortcuts, tap Library, then Automation, then +. If you see Describe a shortcut, tap Edit. Tap Automation, then Message. On iOS 26, open the Automation tab, tap +, and choose Message.

  3. Choose which texts to send. Choose Message Contains (on iOS 27, change Sender to Message) and type a word only those texts contain, such as school. A single space sends nearly everything, so think about who reads that iPad.

The trigger reading “When I receive a message where Message contains Code”
  4. Make it run without asking. On iOS 27, tap the arrow beside the trigger and check that Confirm Before Run is off. Under ⓘ, then Privacy, check that Allow Running When Locked is on. On iOS 26, choose Run Immediately, then tap Next and Create New Shortcut.

  5. Add Fwrd’s action. Search for Forward and add Forward Message to All Destinations. Tap its Message and choose Shortcut Input (on iOS 26, Shortcut Input, then Message). Tap back to save (Done on iOS 26).

  6. That’s it. New texts with your word now go to that chat on the iPad on their own, with the iPhone unlocked or locked.

To show who texted, turn on Include Who Sent It in Fwrd’s Settings, then choose Sender on Fwrd’s action in Shortcuts. For email or WhatsApp, save the iPad user’s address or WhatsApp number in Fwrd, then add Apple’s Send Email or WhatsApp’s own Send Message below Fwrd’s action with Fwrd’s output and that recipient; that action does the sending, and Send Email needs a subject and Show Compose Sheet off. If the iPad’s user also has a phone, Apple’s Send Message can send to its number instead, as the phone guide shows.

Text Message Forwarding and Fwrd compared

Apple’s setting covers devices on your own Apple Account; Fwrd covers an iPad on someone else’s.

What the iPad gets Your conversations, in Messages New texts that match your rule

The iPhone on and online Needed Needed

What forwarding can’t do

  • Fwrd runs on the iPhone, not the iPad. Someone sets up the automation on the iPhone that gets the texts, once.
  • One way, text only. A reply in the chat app comes from that app’s account, not your number, and pictures stay on the iPhone.
  • New texts only, and only ones that match the automation.
  • The iPhone stays on and online. After a restart, unlock it once; an iPhone that isn’t unlocked for three days restarts itself.

Questions about texts on iPad

Can a cellular iPad with a SIM get text messages?

Not as texts in Messages. Apple says Wi-Fi + Cellular iPads support cellular data only, not cellular phone service. That data lets the iPad use iMessage and chat apps away from Wi-Fi.

Can an iPad get iMessages without an iPhone?

Yes. Turn on iMessage in Settings, then Apps, then Messages, and the iPad sends and receives iMessages with other iMessage users.

Does Fwrd run on the iPad?

No. Fwrd runs on the iPhone that receives the texts, with iOS 26 or later, because it relies on Apple Shortcuts there. The iPad only needs the chat app or inbox the texts go to.

Does it cost anything?

Fwrd is free for 15 forwards a month, and a text counts once however many places it goes. Fwrd Pro removes the limit for $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year in the US.

Texts for an iPad on another Apple Account?

Fwrd adds one action to a Shortcuts automation on your iPhone, so matching new texts reach a chat app or inbox on any iPad. Start with 15 free forwards each month.

Free for 15 forwards a month. Pro removes the limits on forwards and filters and adds a Never Forward list, for $4.99/month or $29.99/year, with a 7-day free trial on the yearly plan for eligible customers.
