How to Stop Carrying Two Phones for Work
By Fwrd · · Updated
To stop carrying two phones, leave the work iPhone at your desk and forward its texts to the phone you carry. Fwrd does the forwarding from the work iPhone, so the work number and the phone stay exactly as IT set them up. Whether it’s allowed depends mostly on your employer, because the number, the messages on it and often the phone itself belong to the company.
What you need: your employer’s OK first, the work iPhone on iOS 26 or later, a charger and Wi-Fi where it stays, and Fwrd.
Should you combine your work and personal phone?
Only with your employer’s agreement, and only if you’re happy for work to reach you on the phone you carry everywhere.
- The number may not be yours. A company line usually belongs to the company, so leave it on the work iPhone.
- A managed work iPhone has its own rules. IT may limit which apps and automations you can add, or forbid moving work messages to a personal device.
- One phone means work all the time. A Focus on your iPhone can quiet work contacts after hours, but the forwarded texts still land on your personal phone.
What forwarding gives you
The work iPhone stays on a charger at your desk, and its texts reach you wherever you are. You choose where they go: your personal iPhone, an email address, WhatsApp, or a work Slack or Microsoft Teams channel if that’s where your company wants work texts. Fwrd has eight destinations, with no account and no sign-up. Your texts are processed on the iPhone itself, and Fwrd has no server in the middle.
You can also filter. Forward only texts that contain a client’s name or a ticket word, and the rest stay on the work iPhone. A text that’s skipped doesn’t use up one of your free forwards.
How to forward the work iPhone’s texts to the phone you carry
Add your personal iPhone in Fwrd on the work iPhone. Open Fwrd, tap +, and choose Another Phone. Under Recipient Reference, enter your personal number, and save with the tick. A work Slack or Microsoft Teams channel works too.
Create a Message automation. On iOS 27, open Shortcuts, tap Library, then Automation, then +. If you see Describe a shortcut, tap Edit. Tap Automation, then Message, and change Sender to Message. On iOS 26, open the Automation tab, tap +, and choose Message.
Choose which texts to forward. Type a word only the texts you need contain, such as a client’s name or ticket. To forward any text with a space in it, nearly all of them, type a single space.
Let it run without asking. On iOS 27, tap the arrow beside the trigger and check Confirm Before Run is off, then under ⓘ, then Privacy, check Allow Running When Locked is on. On iOS 26, choose Run Immediately, then tap Next and Create New Shortcut.
Add Fwrd’s action, then Apple’s Send Message. Add Forward Message to All Destinations with its Message field set to Shortcut Input. Below it, add Send Message, set its Message to Fwrd’s output and its Recipients to your personal number, and check Show Compose Sheet is off. Tap back to save (Done on iOS 26).
That’s it. New work texts now reach your personal phone on their own, with the work iPhone unlocked or locked.
Turn on Include Who Sent It in Fwrd’s Settings and choose Sender on Fwrd’s action, so each forward starts with a From: line naming the customer or colleague. The forward all texts post covers the every-text setup in more detail.
About the free plan: Fwrd forwards 15 texts a month for free. A busy work line passes that quickly if you forward everything, and the alert appears on the work iPhone. Fwrd Pro removes the limit for $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year in the US. A keyword filter keeps the count down.
What forwarding can’t do
- It can’t reply as the work number. A reply from your personal iPhone comes from your own number and goes to the work iPhone, so reply to customers from the work iPhone when you’re back at your desk.
- It doesn’t move calls. Carriers forward calls, not texts, so calls still ring the work iPhone unless your carrier setting sends them elsewhere.
- It can’t forward pictures, only the text, and only new texts.
- It can’t keep working on a flat or offline phone. After a restart, the work iPhone waits until someone unlocks it once, and one that isn’t unlocked for three days restarts itself.
Questions about carrying one phone for work
Can I reply to work texts from my personal phone?
Not as the work number. With forwarding, replies come from your personal number, so answer from the work iPhone when you’re at your desk. Turn on Include Who Sent It so you know whom to answer.
Is it allowed to forward work texts to my personal phone?
That’s your employer’s call. Many companies forbid moving work messages to personal devices or outside apps, so ask your manager or IT, and use a company Slack or Teams channel if that’s what they prefer.
Does the work iPhone have to stay on?
Yes. It has to be charged, on Wi-Fi or cellular, and unlocked once after any restart. Leave it on a charger at your desk.
