Can You Use Google Voice for Verification Codes?
By Fwrd · · Updated
Sometimes. Google says you can't send texts to five- or six-digit short codes from Google Voice, and some banks and subscription services won't text Google Voice numbers at all. Codes that do reach a real mobile number on your iPhone can be sent on automatically by Fwrd, to a chat, an inbox or another phone, so you see them wherever you are.
What you need: an iPhone with the mobile number that's on the account, and somewhere to read the codes, such as a Telegram group, a Slack or Discord channel, an email address or another phone. Fwrd needs iOS 26 or later.
Why doesn't the code arrive on Google Voice?
Google's Google Voice help page (checked October 19, 2026) says: “You can't send texts to five- or six-digit ‘short code’ numbers.” Many verification codes come from short numbers, so a code can fail for that reason alone.
The same page says: “Some websites, such as banks or subscription services, won't send text messages to Google Voice numbers.” So the site can refuse the number before any code is sent.
Google's page doesn't list which sites accept a Google Voice number. If a site refuses it, change the number on that account to a mobile number your iPhone receives texts on.
What if a code doesn’t arrive?
Work through these in order, because the first one is the most common cause:
- Check the number on the account. Make sure it's typed exactly as you own it, with the country code, and that it's the number you chose for the site.
- Look for the site's own help page. Many sites list which numbers they accept for codes. If the page doesn't say, ask the site's support team which numbers it can text.
- Use the iPhone's own mobile number. Codes sent to a number the iPhone receives texts on arrive there like any other text, and Fwrd can pass them on.
How to send only the codes with Fwrd
Fwrd runs inside a Shortcuts automation on the iPhone that receives the code. Texts are processed on the phone, and there's no Fwrd server in between. Here's the setup:
- Add a destination. In Fwrd, tap +, choose Telegram, Slack or Discord, and paste its details. The Telegram guide shows the bot setup step by step.
- Turn on the verification-code filter. On that destination, switch on the verification-code filter, so only texts that look like a code are sent. A text the filter skips doesn't use up a free forward.
- Create the Message automation. In Shortcuts, add a Message automation, choose Message Contains and type a single space to match every message, then set it to run without asking, as the Fwrd automation guide shows.
- Add Fwrd's action. Use Forward Message to All Destinations, with Shortcut Input as the message.
- That’s it. The next code a site texts you reaches your chat on its own, with the iPhone unlocked or locked.
Now a code that arrives on the iPhone goes to your chat, and the rest of your texts stay on the phone. The verification-code filter works on every destination. Slack, Discord, Telegram, Microsoft Teams and webhooks use it straight away; Email, Another Phone and WhatsApp need their send action inside an If, with “I Added the If” turned on, until then they get every text the automation passes on.
Can codes go to more than one place?
Yes. Add as many destinations as you like and one forward reaches all of them, counted once. A code can land in a Telegram group for a team and in your inbox, for example. Turn on Include Who Sent It in Fwrd's Settings and choose Sender on Fwrd's action, and each forward starts with a From: line, so you can tell which service sent the code.
Fwrd is free for 15 forwards a month. Because the verification-code filter forwards only codes, those 15 go a long way. Fwrd Pro removes the limit for $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year in the US.
What this doesn’t solve
- Codes can still be late. Carriers can hold texts for a time, and a phone that's off or out of signal delivers them when it reconnects. What happens to texts when your iPhone is off covers the details.
- Some sites don't text at all. A site that only sends codes by email or inside an app needs that route, not a phone number.
- The phone has to stay on and online. After a restart, unlock it once before forwarding starts again.
- Text only, one way. Pictures don't forward, and you can't reply through the forward.
Questions about codes and Google Voice
Does Google Voice ever get verification codes?
Yes, when the code comes from a regular number and the site allows Google Voice numbers. Google's page says you can't send texts to five- or six-digit short codes, and some banks and subscription services don't text Google Voice numbers.
Is Google Voice OK for two-factor sign-in?
It depends on the site. Some sites accept it, and some don't. Should you use a second phone number for 2FA? covers what to weigh.
Can Fwrd forward codes to Google Voice?
Not as a destination. Fwrd's destinations are Email, another phone, WhatsApp, Discord, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Telegram and your own webhook. Forward codes to one of those, and read them there.
Will Fwrd forward codes when my iPhone is locked?
Yes, once the automation runs without asking. After a restart, unlock the iPhone once and forwarding carries on.
