# iPhone SMS forwarding: methods and limits

## Short answer

"iPhone SMS forwarding" can refer to three different workflows:

1. Forward selected message bubbles manually to another Messages recipient.
2. Use Apple's Text Message Forwarding or Messages in iCloud to continue conversations on eligible Apple devices.
3. Create a Message Personal Automation in Shortcuts to run actions when an incoming message matches chosen criteria.

These workflows are not interchangeable.

## How Fwrd fits

Fwrd exposes a Forward Message action to Apple Shortcuts. It cannot create the Message Personal Automation programmatically. The customer chooses the trigger criteria, passes the message and sender into Fwrd, and controls whether the automation remains enabled.

The current supported Fwrd destinations are Slack, Discord, and Telegram. Microsoft Teams, custom HTTPS webhooks, Email, another phone or iMessage, and WhatsApp are planned, with different direct-HTTP or native-Shortcuts delivery modes.

## Important limits

- The iPhone must be powered on and connected to the internet.
- Simulator success does not prove locked-device incoming-SMS behavior.
- Native Send Message, Send Email, and WhatsApp actions can have different confirmation and locked-device rules from Fwrd's direct HTTPS requests.
- Fwrd cannot observe final delivery by a native Shortcuts action and should not represent action completion as confirmed recipient delivery.
- Destination services and carriers can impose their own limits or costs.
