If an SMS verification code isn’t arriving on your iPhone, look in Messages’ Unknown Senders and Transactions folders first, then check Blocked Contacts, Focus and your cellular signal. If none of those explain it, the text most likely never reached the phone, and the fix is with your carrier or the service sending the code.

**What you need:** the iPhone the code is sent to, on iOS 26 or iOS 27, and a few minutes. Keep your carrier’s support number handy for the last step.

## Where do missing verification codes go?

Either somewhere on the iPhone you didn’t look, or nowhere, because the carrier never delivered them. The table matches what you see with the likely cause.

| What you see | Likely cause | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| No notification, nothing in your conversations | Messages filed it under Unknown Senders or Transactions | The Filter button in Messages’ conversation list |
| Nothing at all from one sender | You blocked that number once | Settings → Privacy & Security → Blocked Contacts |
| The code is there, but you weren’t alerted | A Focus or Do Not Disturb silenced it | Control Center |
| The code was there, then vanished | Delete After Use removed it after AutoFill | Settings → General → Autofill & Passwords |
| Other texts arrive, codes from short numbers don’t | A short-code block on your line, or you’re abroad | Your carrier |
| Nothing arrives on Wi-Fi only | SMS needs a cellular connection | Signal bars, Wi-Fi Calling |

## How to find a missing SMS code, step by step

Work through these in order. Each one takes under a minute.

1. **Look in Unknown Senders.** In Messages, tap the Filter button in the conversation list, then tap Unknown Senders. With Screen Unknown Senders on, Apple’s [guide to screening texts](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/screen-and-filter-texts-iph203ab0be4/ios) says texts from numbers you’ve never saved go there without a notification. Open the code’s conversation and tap Mark as Known so the next one lands in your list.

2. **Look in Transactions.** If Text Message Filter is on, codes and order updates from unknown senders can be sorted into Transactions instead. The same filter menu lists it.

3. **Let codes notify you.** In the filter menu, tap Manage Filtering, then Allow Notifications (it shows once Screen Unknown Senders is on), and turn on time-sensitive texts. Apple names verification codes as the example. Options vary by country.

4. **Check Blocked Contacts.** Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Blocked Contacts. A short number you blocked to stop marketing texts may be the same one that sends your codes. Apple’s page on [blocking contacts](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/block-contacts-iph2527f620e/ios) shows how to unblock one.

5. **Turn off any Focus.** Do Not Disturb and other Focus modes silence notifications, but the text still arrives. Open Messages and look, or turn the Focus off in Control Center.

6. **Check Delete After Use.** Go to Settings → General → Autofill & Passwords, and look under Verification Codes. With Delete After Use on, Apple’s page on [filling in codes](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/automatically-fill-in-verification-codes-ipha6173c19f/ios) says codes you fill in with AutoFill are deleted afterwards. Turn it off if you want to keep them.

7. **Get a cellular signal.** Apple’s [troubleshooting page for Messages](https://support.apple.com/en-us/118433) says SMS needs a cellular network connection. A code sent by SMS won’t come over Wi-Fi alone, unless your carrier delivers texts over Wi-Fi Calling. Turn Airplane Mode on and off, or restart the iPhone. With Dual SIM, check that the line the service has on file is turned on under Settings → Cellular.

8. **Ask your carrier about short codes.** Some codes come from short codes, the short numbers businesses send from. Apple says to contact your carrier if you can’t receive SMS. Ask whether short-code or premium messages are blocked on your line, and whether your account is up to date.

Before you tap Resend, wait a minute or two. Several requests in a row can hit a service’s limit, and only the newest code may work.

## Why don’t verification codes arrive when I’m abroad?

Often because short codes are national. Twilio, which sends texts for apps, says a short code can only [reach same-country numbers](https://support.twilio.com/hc/en-us/articles/223182328-Can-Twilio-Short-Codes-Be-Used-to-Send-SMS-Messages-Internationally), and delivery to a roaming phone isn’t guaranteed. Ask the service for a voice call or an authenticator app instead, or see [getting texts from your home number abroad](https://www.fwrdsms.com/blog/receive-sms-from-home-number-abroad).

## Does a Shortcuts automation hide verification codes?

No. A Message automation runs after a text arrives, and Shortcuts has no action that deletes or hides a text, so the code stays in Messages. If an automation used to send your codes somewhere else and they stopped showing up there, the automation stopped running. [Why a Shortcuts automation stops running](https://www.fwrdsms.com/blog/shortcuts-automation-not-running) covers that.

## When the code arrives on a phone you don’t carry

Some codes arrive fine, just on the wrong phone: a work iPhone in a drawer, a spare iPhone with your home-country SIM, or a shared number your whole team signs in with. [Fwrd](https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id6759069713?pt=128544281&ct=blog-code-not-arriving&mt=8) can’t make a code arrive, but once it does, it sends it on.

- **Where it goes:** Slack, Discord, Telegram, Microsoft Teams, your own webhook, email, another phone or WhatsApp, from a Shortcuts Message automation on the iPhone that gets the code.
- **No account:** Fwrd has no sign-in, and texts are processed on the iPhone.
- **Only the codes:** every destination can keep only texts that look like a verification code. For email, another phone and WhatsApp, put the send action inside an If in the shortcut first.
- **The price:** 15 free forwards a month. Fwrd Pro is $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year in the US.

The [verification code page](https://www.fwrdsms.com/forward-verification-codes-iphone) walks through the setup.

## What these checks can’t fix

- **A code sent somewhere else.** Services send to the number on your account. If it’s an old number, update it in the service’s settings.
- **The carrier’s side.** Blocks, account holds and network faults are only visible to your carrier.
- **An iPhone that’s off.** Texts wait with the carrier for a limited time, and a code may have expired by then. See [what happens to texts when your iPhone is off](https://www.fwrdsms.com/blog/texts-when-iphone-is-off).
- **SMS itself.** Where a service offers it, an authenticator app avoids texts entirely. Apple’s Passwords app can generate these codes on the iPhone.

## Questions people ask

### Why do I get normal texts but not verification codes?

Codes come from numbers you haven’t saved, so they can be screened into Unknown Senders or Transactions, blocked by a marketing-text block, or stopped by a short-code block on your line. Check those three.

### Why is my code in Unknown Senders?

Screen Unknown Senders is on, and the number isn’t in your Contacts. Tap Mark as Known in that conversation, or allow notifications for time-sensitive texts in Manage Filtering.

### Do verification codes come by iMessage?

Codes from banks and apps come as SMS or RCS, in green bubbles. SMS needs a cellular signal or Wi-Fi Calling, and RCS also works over Wi-Fi. Codes from Apple for your Apple Account can also appear as a prompt on your other Apple devices.

### Can I forward verification codes to another phone automatically?

Yes, once they arrive. A Shortcuts Message automation that matches the word code can hand each one to Fwrd, which sends it to a chat app or webhook, or passes it to Apple’s Send Message or Send Email for another phone or email, with the iPhone locked or unlocked.
