Yes, but only in one setup: Teams can send and receive SMS on a Microsoft Teams Calling Plan number in the US, Puerto Rico or Canada, after your company is approved by The Campaign Registry. A regular Teams account or channel can’t get texts by itself. If you just want the texts that reach your iPhone to show up in a Teams channel, a Shortcuts automation with Fwrd does that, with no Teams phone number.

**What you need:** for Microsoft’s route, a Teams admin, Teams Phone and Calling Plan licences, and Brand and Campaign approval. For the iPhone route, an iPhone on iOS 26 or later, a Teams channel where you can add a Workflow, and Fwrd.

## Can a Teams phone number receive SMS?

Only a Microsoft Calling Plan number that an admin has enabled for SMS. Microsoft’s [Plan for SMS in Teams with Microsoft Calling Plan numbers](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/sms-overview) (updated 2026-05-29) sets these conditions:

- **Where:** users in the United States (including Puerto Rico) and Canada, where Microsoft says it’s still rolling out. Texting outside those countries isn’t supported.
- **Licences:** Teams, Teams Phone and a Microsoft Teams Calling Plan, with a Calling Plan number assigned and the user voice-enabled.
- **Registration:** your company’s Brand and Campaign must be approved by The Campaign Registry (the 10DLC system) before any number can text. Microsoft says this applies “even if it isn’t for marketing purposes”.
- **Chats:** SMS works in one-on-one chats. MMS, attachments, emojis and GIFs aren’t supported.
- **Number types:** Calling Plans support SMS only where the sender is a 10-digit long code, not short codes (like 12345), toll-free numbers or alphanumeric sender IDs.
- **Cost:** received texts count against the plan’s pooled allowance (200 per user on a Domestic plan, 0 on pay-as-you-go), then a fee for each message segment, plus carrier fees.

That route makes sense for a business that wants two-way texting on a Teams number and is ready to register. It’s a lot for “I want the texts on our work phone to appear in our channel”.

## Microsoft’s SMS or forwarding from an iPhone?

Use Microsoft’s SMS if you need a two-way business number in Teams; forward from an iPhone if you only need to see the texts in a channel.

| | SMS in Teams (Microsoft) | iPhone texts to Teams (Fwrd) |
|---|---|---|
| Number used | A Teams Calling Plan number | The iPhone’s own number |
| Setup | Admin licences plus 10DLC Brand and Campaign approval | A Teams Workflow and one Shortcuts automation |
| Where it shows | A one-on-one Teams chat | Any channel you pick |
| Short codes and sender IDs | Not supported, per Microsoft | Whatever reaches the iPhone |
| Replies | Two-way | One-way: replies come from the iPhone |
| Cost | Included allowance, then per segment | 15 free forwards a month, then $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year |

## How to get iPhone texts into a Teams channel

These steps post each matching text to a channel. [Fwrd](https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id6759069713?pt=128544281&ct=blog-teams-sms&mt=8) sends it to a Teams Workflow, which posts it as a plain card.

Watch the setup video on the [setup guide](https://www.fwrdsms.com/guides/microsoft-teams).

1. **Make the Workflow.** In Teams, open the channel, choose More options (•••) beside its name, then Workflows. Pick “Send webhook alerts to a channel”, check the team and channel, choose Save, and copy the webhook URL.

2. **Add Teams in Fwrd.** Open Fwrd, tap +, and choose Microsoft Teams. Paste the URL into the Configuration field, tap Send Test Message, then save with the tick.

3. **Create a Message automation.** On iOS 27, open Shortcuts, tap Library, then Automation, then +. If you see Describe a shortcut, tap Edit. Tap Automation, then Message. On iOS 26, open the Automation tab, tap + (or New Automation), and choose Message.

4. **Choose which texts to forward.** Choose Message Contains (on iOS 27, change Sender to Message), then type a word your texts contain, such as code. To forward any text with a space in it, type a single space instead. On iOS 26, tap Next.

5. **Make it run without asking.** On iOS 27, tap the arrow beside the trigger and check that Confirm Before Run is off. Under ⓘ, then Privacy, check that Allow Running When Locked is on. On iOS 26, choose Run Immediately, then tap Next and Create New Shortcut.

6. **Add Fwrd’s action.** Search for Forward (on iOS 26, tap Add Action first) and add Fwrd’s Forward Message to All Destinations. Tap its Message field, tap Select Variable and choose Shortcut Input (on iOS 26, Shortcut Input, then Message). Tap back to save (Done on iOS 26).

7. **That’s it.** New texts with your word now go to your Teams channel on their own, with the iPhone unlocked or locked.

The [Microsoft Teams setup guide](https://www.fwrdsms.com/guides/microsoft-teams) covers the Workflow screens and the old connector URLs that no longer work.

## Why choose Fwrd for texts in Teams?

Because it skips the Calling Plan and the registration when all you need is to see the texts. We make Fwrd, so here’s our case, and each point is on its [Teams page](https://www.fwrdsms.com/iphone-sms-to-microsoft-teams) or App Store listing:

- **No Teams phone number and no 10DLC approval.** It uses the number your iPhone already has.
- **No Fwrd account and no Fwrd server.** Texts go from the iPhone to your Workflow.
- **Filters for Teams.** In the destination’s Which Texts section, keep only texts with your words, ones that look like a code (4 to 8 digits), or ones that arrive at certain hours. The free plan allows one condition per destination.
- **Short-code texts arrive like any other text.** That’s how many sign-in codes are sent; [forwarding verification codes](https://www.fwrdsms.com/forward-verification-codes-iphone) covers that case.
- **Eight destinations.** Besides Teams, the same action posts to Discord, Slack, Telegram and your own webhook, and hands the text to Apple’s or WhatsApp’s own action for Email, another phone or iMessage, and WhatsApp.

## What forwarding to Teams can’t do

It can’t reply, send pictures, or run from a phone that’s off.

- **It’s one-way.** A reply in Teams doesn’t go back as a text. Answer from the iPhone.
- **Text only.** Pictures and attachments don’t forward.
- **The iPhone must be on and online.** Wi-Fi or mobile data both work. After a restart, unlock it once before forwarding starts again.
- **Shortcuts needs a rule.** A text with no spaces won’t match a single-space trigger.
- **The Workflow must stay on.** If someone turns it off or deletes it, posts stop.

For a whole team watching one work phone, [sharing a work phone’s texts with your team](https://www.fwrdsms.com/forward-shared-phone-texts-to-team) walks through the setup.

## Questions people ask next

### Can a Teams Direct Routing or Operator Connect number receive SMS?

Not through Microsoft’s own SMS feature: its SMS page covers Microsoft Teams Calling Plan numbers only, so plan on a Calling Plan number for SMS in Teams. If the texts already reach an iPhone, Fwrd can post them to a channel whatever phone system your company uses.

### Will Teams show who sent the text?

Only if you turn it on. By default Fwrd posts the text exactly as it arrived. Switch on Include Who Sent It in Fwrd’s Settings, then choose Sender on Fwrd’s action in Shortcuts, and each post starts with a From: line.

### Why does Teams show nothing when Fwrd says it sent?

The Workflow was probably built from the bare webhook trigger, which accepts the request and posts nothing. Create it again from the “Send webhook alerts to a channel” template and paste the new URL into Fwrd.

### Does it cost anything?

Fwrd is free for 15 forwards a month, and a text counts once however many places it goes. Fwrd Pro removes the limit for $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year in the US. Microsoft’s own Workflow limits apply on the Teams side.
